    DESCRIPTION:
    THE SCIROCCO
    THAT WON
    JOHNNY RUTHERFORD.
Johnny Rutherford makes his living by driving over 200 miles an hour in a Chaparral that costs a quarter of a million dollars. He's won more races than you can shake a checkered flag at, including three firsts in the Indy 500.
Out of all the high performance cars there are in this world, the sports car he chose was the Volkswagen Scirocco. How come, J.R.?
"Because the Scirocco's overhead cam engine and front-wheel drive, along with excellent aerodynamics give it speed, performance, and believe it or not...terrific fuel economy." (EPA estimated [25] mpg, 40 mpg highway estimate. Use "estimated mpg" for comparison. Mpg varies with speed, trip length, weather. Actual highway mpg will probably be less.)
"Whoever engineered this car did one heck of a job putting the power, handling, steering, comfort and braking all in just the right balance.
"Sure there are more powerful sports cars around but who needs them on the highway or in downtown Indianapolis. My Scirocco is plenty of car for me. All in all, it's a winner. And that's important.
"Because nobody ever remembers who finished second."
J.R., we couldn't have said it better ourselves.
    VOLKSWAGEN DOES IT AGAIN
    *******************************************
    SCIROCCO. THE SUPER VW!
No. we're not referring to one of the worlds most competitive classes of open-wheel racing cars. Those are Super vees.
What we're talking about here is the Scirocco. The Super vw. But while a Super vee and a Scirocco are indeed very different kinds of vehicles, they do have one thing in common beyond their basic powerplants-the success of each is based on a formula.
The Scirocco's has. in the words of the Rood & Track Guide to Sports & GT Cars-,,...that important balance that means power, handling, ride, steering, comfort and brakes are all in proper proportion"- which would seem to leave little to say...except Road & Track's editors said all that about the 1980 Scirocco. And for 1981 VW has improved its formula.
For even better balanced power, the displacement of the Scirocco's overhead cam Four has been increased to 1715 cc.
The result is maximum horsepower and torque are achieved at significantly lower engine rpm. Peak horsepower is developed at 5000 rpm. Maximum torque (which is also up more than 6%): at a mere 3000 rpm. And both outputs come
on smoothly and reliably with the Scirocco's K-Jefronic fuel injection, breakerless transistor ignition and state of the art emission controls, including oxygen sensor and 3-way catalyst for all 50 states.
But VW's fine-tuning didn't stop with enhancing the tractability of the Scirocco's engine. This led to the development of new, more efficient ratios for the two overdrive gears and final drive of the Scirocco's 5-speed transaxle, which is standard equipment for 1981.
Now, the Scirocco will go from 0 to 50 mph in 8.2 seconds. It'll also cruise at 55 mph in fifth with the engine turning at a serene 2500 rpm. while flat-out in fourth, it's capable of 100 mph on the test track. And its fuel economy? it's exemplary roo-an EPA estimated
[25jmpg, 40 mpg highway estimate. (Use "estimated mpg" for comparisons. Your mileage may vary with weather, speed and trip length. Actual highway mileage will probably be less.)
But no less important than what the Scirocco has gained is all that it hasn't lost, its front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering with negative roll-radius wheel geometry and disc/drum brakes haven't changed. Thus, neither has its handling, about which Car and Driver said of the '80-"when you twist the wheel the Scirocco answers with a click of the heels and a dive toward the apex." Then there's its taut aerodynamic body and functional interior.
Both remain the clean, uncluttered work of the modern master Giugiaro.
With all this, is there any wonder why we call the Scirocco "the Super VW"? That is, unless you're wondering about the "S" model shown below, with the addition of form-fitting sport front seats inside; wide 70-series radials, deep front air dam and matte black trim outside... we call that "the Super Scirocco."
