PABLO CASALS
Signed autograph letter in French (1948), from Prades, two years before he became head of the Festival there, reporting that French customs agents had demanded an extravagant sum for tobacco sent to him as a gift.
Autograph Letter signed:
"Pablo Casals",
1 page, 5½x6¼.
Prades, P. O. [Pyrénées-Orientales], France. In French, loosely translated, to
"Dear Mr. and Mrs. Keurs". Casals said he had waited for the arrival of their nice package before responding to their letter. The package contained two fine boxes of "Prince Albert," and he was looking forward to smoking it in his pipe as a reminder of the days they had spent together. Unfortunately, French customs demanded an abusive sum for it. In any case, that had nothing to do his nice meeting with the Keurs. He closes with salutations and best wishes.
Casals
(1876-1973, born Pau Casals in Vendrell, Spain)
achieved worldwide renown as a violoncellist, conductor and composer.
Casals was born near Barcelona, Spain, and was a patriot opposed to tyranny. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) established General Francisco Franco as dictator of a bloody totalitarian state. Casals was so opposed to the Franco regime that he declined to appear in countries that recognized the totalitarian Spanish government, making an exception when
he took part in a concert of chamber music in the White House on Nov. 13, 1961, at the invitation of President Kennedy, whom he admired. After fleeing Spain in 1939, Casals settled in Prades, across the border in the French Pyrenees.
For a time, he ceased playing altogether, but in 1950 he organized a chamber musical festival in Prades, running it until 1966 and performing in it until 1976. The festival continues, now named the Festival Pablo Casals.
Left edge slightly ragged (previous binding). Horizontal fold crease. Otherwise, fine condition.

Shipping
- We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges are calculated at time of payment and are dependent on the number of items purchased and the destination shipping address.
